Artist : Anne Baker

Artist's Biography:
Anne Baker is an artist and art therapist living and working the Boston area. She creates art for similar reasons that one of her favorite authors, Neil Gaiman writes: "to get an idea or an image out of my head and pinned safely down on paper; releasing demons, letting them fly." (Neil Gaiman, Introduction to Smoke and Mirrors, 1998.)Her work deals with her own inner workings; images and thoughts in her head that won't go away until they are put safely into a visual image. The 10 piece series "Things Inside My Head" was the most literal manifestation of that process, completed as part of her senior thesis work in art school. "Scream" was a direct result of a rather drawn out argument with her professor. Other pieces come from her reactions to her work as an art therapist. Dark themes tend to pervade, as they tend to make somewhat more compelling images. There is humor as well, sadness and tenderness. Each piece tells a story. Viewers are invited to create their own stories in response to the work.
Anne's recent work is in a period of flux. She is moving from creating raw emotional art that is "subtle like a brick" and more towards multilayered and nuanced pieces. She works primarily in acrylic and found images and objects.
When she is not creating art, she spends a lot of time at the gym, knitting, and pushing her cat out of her lap so that she can actually get some work done.
